What is AI share of voice?
AI Share of Voice (SOV) measures the percentage of AI-generated responses that mention your brand relative to all brand mentions in your competitive category. It answers one question: when AI recommends products in your space, how often are you included?
From ad impressions to AI recommendations
Traditional Share of Voice tracked advertising impressions and media mentions. AI Share of Voice tracks what matters more in 2026: which brands AI platforms recommend to users who are researching, comparing, and deciding what to buy.
SOV predicts market share
In traditional advertising, a brand’s Share of Voice predicts its future market share. That’s the SOV/SOM rule documented by Binet & Field. Early evidence suggests it holds in AI too: brands with higher AI SOV tend to capture more organic traffic and conversions from AI-referred users.
How it works
How Siftly calculates AI share of voice
Siftly runs your prompt library daily across every monitored platform, counts brand mentions per response, and computes your share as a percentage of total mentions across all tracked competitors: AI SOV = (Your Brand Mentions ÷ Total Brand Mentions in Category) × 100.
Define your competitive set
Add the competitors you want to measure against. This list becomes the denominator for your SOV calculation: "mentions of your brand" as a percentage of "mentions of you plus every tracked competitor".
Run prompt-based measurement
Your prompt library (representing real customer questions) runs across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews on a regular cadence.
Count and categorize mentions
Every brand mention in every response is counted and tagged with metadata: platform, prompt category, sentiment, and mention position.
Calculate SOV
Your brand's mentions are divided by total mentions to produce SOV percentages: overall, per platform, per topic, and per time period.
SOV breakdown
Four ways to slice your SOV
Siftly computes SOV across four dimensions so you can read the metric by headline number, platform, topic, or trend.
| Dimension | Example | Strategic Use |
|---|---|---|
| Overall SOV | Your brand: 28% across all prompts/platforms | Headline metric for executive reporting |
| Platform SOV | ChatGPT: 35%, Perplexity: 18% | Identify which platforms need optimization |
| Topic SOV | “Pricing” prompts: 40%, “Features” prompts: 15% | Find content gaps by topic area |
| Trend SOV | SOV grew from 22% to 28% over 90 days | Measure impact of GEO campaigns |
The formula stays constant across every view: AI SOV = (Your Brand Mentions ÷ Total Brand Mentions in Category) × 100.

How to grow your AI share of voice
Growing AI SOV combines content optimization, authority building, and ongoing monitoring. Treat it as a repeatable loop, not a one-time push.
Identify low-SOV topics
Use Siftly's topic-level SOV breakdown to find prompt categories where you underperform. These are your highest-return optimization targets.
Create definitive content for each weak topic
Build comprehensive, data-rich pages that address each topic area better than any competitor. Use GEO Content tools to structure it for AI extraction.
Build third-party authority
AI models learn from the broader web. Guest posts, industry reports, directory listings, and press coverage that mention your brand all contribute to your AI entity recognition.
Measure weekly, optimize monthly
Track SOV changes weekly to detect trends early. Conduct monthly strategy reviews to adjust content priorities based on what's moving the needle.
Getting started
Time to value, not time to configure
Go from competitive set to a full SOV baseline in days. Setup doesn’t take weeks.
Day 1
Define your competitive set
Add the competitors you want to benchmark against. Siftly uses this list as the denominator when it computes your share of AI mentions.
Day 1
Get your first SOV snapshot
Once the first pipeline run completes, see your overall SOV, platform-level SOV, topic-level SOV, and head-to-head competitive breakdown.
Week 2
Grow your share
Target low-SOV topics with GEO-optimized content. Watch weekly as your share compounds across platforms and prompt categories.
