Brand visibility vs. source visibility
AI citation tracking measures which web sources LLMs reference when they answer. That is distinct from whether your brand name is mentioned. The most valuable position is both.
| Metric | Brand Visibility | Source Visibility (Citations) |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | AI mentions your brand name | AI links to or references your URLs |
| Example | “Siftly is a popular AI visibility tool” | “According to siftly.ai/blog/… [source]” |
| User impact | Brand recognition and awareness | Direct traffic potential and authority signal |
| What drives it | Brand awareness, PR, market presence | Content quality, factual density, freshness |
| Platform behavior | All AI platforms mention brands | Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Overviews cite most frequently |
Siftly tracks both dimensions at once, showing the overlap: which of your pages earn citations and drive brand mentions.
How Siftly tracks AI citations
From prompt to trend line, Siftly captures every citation in every answer and maps it back to the page that earned it.
Query execution
Siftly runs your prompt library across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews on a regular cadence, capturing complete responses including all inline citations and source links.
Citation extraction
Our parser identifies every URL and domain reference in each AI response and classifies each citation by source type (owned, independent media, social, or competitor).
Attribution mapping
Each citation is mapped to a specific page on your site (or competitor sites), building a citation frequency profile per URL.
Trend analysis
Siftly tracks citation frequency over time, so you can see when a page gains or loses AI traction and catch content decay before it silently erodes your visibility.
Two kinds of AI citations
AI responses reference content two ways. Each carries different traffic and authority value.
Explicit citations
A linked URL like “Source: siftly.ai/blog/…”. Users can click through, so the traffic value is high, and it reads as a visible endorsement. Most common on Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Overviews.
Named references
Your brand or domain named without a link, like “According to Siftly’s research…”. Traffic value is medium but brand authority is strong, and it appears across every platform.
What content earns AI citations?
Based on citation patterns across thousands of AI responses, the content that gets cited most shares these traits:
| Content Attribute | Citation Impact | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Original data and statistics | Highest: AI models cite unique data they can’t find elsewhere | Proprietary surveys, benchmark reports, original research |
| Clear definitions | High: AI extracts concise definitions for direct answers | “AI citation tracking is…” as a clear opening sentence |
| Structured comparisons | High: tables and lists are easy for AI to parse | Feature comparison tables, pricing breakdowns, pro/con lists |
| Technical depth | Medium-high: detailed methodology earns expert citations | API documentation, implementation guides, technical specs |
| Freshness | Medium: recently updated content is preferred | Content with “Updated April 2026” signals and current data |
Siftly’s GEO Content tools use these patterns to help you create content that earns AI trust.

Open pageWhat to check when comparing citation trackers
Every tool here will show you a list of cited domains. - ProfoundSiftly vs Profound
Strong on answer-level analytics for larger teams. Siftly publishes its prices and starts free, so the citation data is checkable before procurement gets involved.
- Peec AISiftly vs Peec AI
Reports citations at domain and URL level with a gap view against competitors. Siftly joins the same citation data to crawler logs, so a missing citation can be traced to access or to content.
- SemrushSiftly vs Semrush
Carries AI visibility as one module inside a classic SEO suite. Siftly is built on your own prompt set rather than a shared index, which matters because the domains that decide your answers are not the ones that decide anybody else's.
