Google Gemini Rank Tracker
Siftly tracks where your brand appears when Google Gemini answers buyer questions. It records position, competitor mentions, grounding sources, and movement over time, so teams can read a pattern instead of a single screenshot.

What Is Gemini Rank Tracking?
Gemini rank tracking measures where your brand lands inside Gemini answers for the prompts your buyers actually use. Position matters, but so do the brands named beside you and the sources the answer was grounded in. All three shape what the buyer takes away.
Ask Gemini the same question twice and the grounding sources can differ. That is why Siftly samples repeatedly and reports the trend rather than a single result.
The narrow intent of this page is Gemini position, not general Gemini mention monitoring. For broader brand tracking, read AI brand monitoring.
Gemini Is Not Google AI Overviews Or AI Mode
This is the distinction most teams get wrong, and it costs them a market. Google ships three separate answer surfaces and they do not behave alike:
- Gemini is the standalone assistant, at gemini.google.com and in the Gemini app.
- Google AI Overviews is the summary above classic results on a normal search.
- Google AI Mode is the conversational search surface inside Google.
A brand can be named in AI Overviews and absent from Gemini on the same question, because the retrieval path and the answer format differ. Siftly tracks all three as separate engines rather than collapsing them into "Google", so a gap in one does not hide behind strength in another. See AI Mode rank tracking and AI Overviews rank tracking.
How Gemini Ranking Works
Gemini does not read your site at the moment a buyer asks a question. Four stages sit between your page and the answer, and each one can drop you.
Googlebot builds the index Gemini draws on. Google grounds Gemini in content from the Google Search index, not from a separate AI crawl. So ordinary crawlability and indexing in Google are the entry ticket. A page Google never indexed cannot be grounded against, whatever else you change.
A scoring gate decides whether Gemini searches at all. Google documents this as dynamic retrieval. Each prompt is scored for how much fresh web content would help, and retrieval only runs above a threshold, documented with a default of 0.3. Below it, the model answers from what it already learned and attributes nothing. No content work wins those prompts, which is why a tracked prompt set should separate the prompts that ground from the prompts that never do.
The model writes its own queries. When Gemini does search, it generates one or several queries of its own rather than passing the buyer's wording straight through, and Google returns them in the grounding metadata. You compete for the machine's phrasing of the question, not the human's. One buyer prompt can open several separate entry points, and each is a chance to be the cited source.
Grounding picks passages, not pages. Google's grounding metadata maps each span of the answer back to specific source chunks. A page can be indexed in full and still have one section earn every citation it gets. That makes the section, not the page, the unit worth working on: lead each one with a direct answer and keep the supporting detail behind it.
Google-Extended Decides Whether Gemini Can Cite You
One line in robots.txt can remove your brand from Gemini answers while every SEO report you own stays green. Few teams check it, because nothing in Search reporting points at it.
Google-Extended is a control token, not a crawler. It never makes a request and it has no user agent of its own. Google's crawler documentation gives it two jobs: whether your content may train future Gemini models, and whether your content may be used for grounding in Gemini Apps. The same documentation states that it does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal.
Read those two facts together and the consequence is uncomfortable. Disallow Google-Extended and you keep your rankings, you keep your AI Overviews citations, and you give up being a grounded source in Gemini. Nothing in Search Console reports the loss, because nothing about Search changed.
This is also the mechanical reason the three Google surfaces diverge. AI Overviews and AI Mode are served from the Googlebot index and governed by Googlebot and snippet directives. Gemini grounding answers to Google-Extended on top of that. One robots.txt line separates them, which is how a brand holds its AI Overviews citations for months while its Gemini presence sits at zero.
Teams reach this state by accident. Someone pastes an AI blocklist to keep the content out of model training, Google-Extended rides along with GPTBot and CCBot, and the Gemini cost never surfaces in a rankings report. Read your own robots.txt before you change anything else. The AI crawler audit checks it in under a minute.

How To Improve Gemini Position
Start with the sources the answer is grounded in. If a competitor is named and a third-party roundup is the grounding source, the question is whether that page mentions you, misdescribes you, or leaves your category out. If Gemini grounds against your own page but still ranks you below a competitor, the page usually needs clearer comparison language, a plainer statement of who it is for, or more checkable evidence.
Siftly connects Gemini tracking with AI citation tracking, GEO content, and competitor benchmarking, so a team moves from "we dropped" to "which page or source should we fix?"
Reporting Gemini Movement
A useful Gemini report separates three signals. Rank movement shows where the brand moved inside the answer. Source movement shows whether the grounding pages changed. Competitor movement shows whether another brand gained presence on the same prompt. Separated, those tell you whether the cause is content, authority, or ordinary answer variation.
Weekly is the right cadence for most teams. Daily sampling helps around a launch or a page rewrite, but weekly summaries keep attention on durable movement instead of noise.
Gemini vs ChatGPT
The two do not surface evidence the same way. Gemini can ground answers in retrieved sources tied to Google's index, so pages that already perform in Google search often have a head start. ChatGPT cites sources when it searches, while other answers lean more on model knowledge. A brand strong in one is regularly absent from the other, which is the argument for tracking both rather than treating either as a proxy. See ChatGPT rank tracking.
Track Every Engine
Gemini is one of several places buyers ask for a shortlist. Siftly also tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Mode, AI Overviews, and cross-engine LLM rank tracking.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check where my brand ranks in Google Gemini?
Run the prompts your buyers use, or use Siftly to track them repeatedly for position, grounding sources, and competitor presence.
Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overviews?
No. Gemini is Google's standalone assistant. AI Overviews is the summary shown above classic search results, and AI Mode is the conversational surface inside Google. They are tracked separately because a brand can appear in one and not the others.
Does Gemini have an official ranking system?
No. Gemini generates an answer rather than a ranked list, so position means how prominently your brand appears inside that answer.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove my brand from Gemini answers?
It removes you as a grounded source. Google's crawler documentation states that Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps, and that it does not affect Google Search inclusion or rankings. A disallow therefore keeps your rankings and your AI Overviews citations while costing you Gemini citations, and no Search report shows the loss. Check your robots.txt with the AI crawler audit.
Why does Gemini answer some questions without citing anything?
Google scores each prompt for how much retrieved web content would improve the answer, and only runs a search above a threshold. Below it, Gemini answers from what the model already learned and names no sources. Those prompts cannot be won with content, so it is worth separating them from the prompts that do ground.
Which Siftly plan includes Gemini tracking?
